Football Search Research: Planning Around Matchdays
Football gives sportsbook publishers the densest calendar of any sport: weekly league rounds, midweek European nights and a final in June. The plan works when every page is tied to a confirmed fixture, and when fixture moves are caught before they go stale.

These are the football events in our calendar, each linked to the official announcement. Matchday-level fixtures are deliberately left out: they change too often to publish as fixed dates, so check the competition's own fixture list on the day you plan.

How intent moves across a matchday
Football queries follow the fixture. Before a match, people look for kick-off times, team news and previews. During it, they want live scores and match events, which Google often answers itself. After it, they want results, highlights and what the result means for the table. A publisher cannot win every phase, so pick the phases where a written page is the best answer.

Season-level windows
- Opening weekend (late August). Interest in fixtures, new signings and season outlooks peaks before the first round.
- Champions League league phase (September to January). Eight matchdays run from September 8-10, 2026 to January 27, 2027, per UEFA.
- Knockouts (February to May). Play-offs in February, round of 16 on March 9/10 and 16/17, quarter-finals in April and semi-finals from April 27/28, 2027.
- Run-in and finals (May to June). The league ends on May 30, 2027; the Champions League final follows on June 5.
Handling fixture changes
- Store the source URL and the date you checked it with every fixture you plan around.
- Recheck the official fixture list 48 hours before a preview goes live, and again on the day.
- If the date moves, update the page and its "Updated" date. If it is postponed with no new date, say so on the page rather than deleting it.
- Never leave a preview live with a wrong kick-off time: it is the fact readers act on.

Market notes
- UK. Under CAP rule 16.3.12, gambling ads must not be likely to be of strong appeal to under-18s, and the ASA lists top-flight footballers as high risk. Keep betting promotion away from player-led preview imagery.
- Australia. In-play online wagering on sporting events is a prohibited service, so "live betting" content aimed at Australians is out of scope.
- US and Canada. Legality is state by state and province by province. Ontario has barred active and retired athletes from iGaming ads since February 28, 2024, except for responsible gambling messages.
