US Sports Seasons and State-by-State Rules

American leagues run back to back: the MLB postseason in October, NFL Sundays from September to February, and an NHL season into April. Every US plan starts with one question the calendar cannot answer: in which states is sports betting legal?

Key points

  • The NHL's 2026-27 season runs September 29, 2026 to April 10, 2027, with 84 games per team for the first time since 1993-94.
  • The NFL's 2026 schedule opens on September 9, 2026, and Super Bowl LXI is on Sunday February 14, 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
  • Since Murphy v. NCAA (May 14, 2018) each state decides on sports betting; the AGA counts 38 states plus Washington, D.C.
  • The AGA marketing code bans "risk free" language and asks for audiences reasonably expected to be at least 73.6% aged 21 or over.

Weekly rhythm versus postseason peaks

The NFL's weekly cycle (games mostly on Sundays, previews from midweek) suits a repeating template: one preview hub per week, updated as injury reports arrive. The postseason breaks the pattern with fewer, bigger games and a single peak at the Super Bowl. Hockey runs a near-daily schedule where season pages and team pages carry more value than game pages.

Start with the state, not the sport

  1. List the states where your brand or client is licensed. Legality is decided state by state, so national pages that encourage betting reach readers in states where it is not allowed.
  2. Check each state's minimum age and required helpline wording, and follow the stricter rule where pages serve several states.
  3. Keep information pages (schedules, rules, how playoffs work) separate from pages that promote betting, and limit the latter to licensed states.
  4. Apply the AGA code: no "risk free" language, no messaging designed to appeal mainly to people under 21, a responsible gaming message in each ad, with a toll-free helpline where practical.

College sports

The AGA code says partnerships with colleges or universities should not promote, market or advertise sports wagering. Google's Event markup guidance also notes that spectator events where the main participants and audience are minors are not eligible on school premises. Treat college content as information, not promotion.

Questions

Where and when is Super Bowl LXI?

The NFL says Sunday February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Is sports betting legal in every US state?

No. Each state decides. The American Gaming Association counts 38 states plus Washington, D.C. with legal sports betting, so check the state before you publish betting content for it.

What is the minimum age for US sports betting content?

It depends on the state. The AGA code asks members to advertise only where at least 73.6% of the audience is reasonably expected to be 21 or older.
