Racing Search Research: Festivals and Big Race Days

Racing's biggest days are fixed far ahead and recur in the same week each year, which makes them the easiest events to plan and the easiest to get wrong with a stale page. Build one permanent page per meeting and update it every year.

Festival days have their own pattern

A four-day festival such as Cheltenham has a headline race each day. Interest builds for weeks, then moves day by day: runners and riders once declarations are made, then results. The final day carries the biggest race. One hub with a section per day handles this better than four separate pages that compete with each other.

One permanent page per meeting

  1. Give each meeting a stable URL without the year, and put the year in the title and text.
  2. When the next year's date is announced by the racecourse, update the page and its "Updated" date, and keep last year's results in a section further down.
  3. Do not change the page date unless the content changed. Google's helpful content guidance warns against changing dates to make pages seem fresh.
  4. Add declarations and runners only from the official racecard, with the time you checked it.

To see when interest really starts for a meeting, compare several years of Trends data around its dates; our guide to reading Trends data explains the time zones and scaling.

Market notes

  • Australia. Wagering is licensed by states and territories. BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register, has operated since August 21, 2023, and lets people exclude themselves from licensed online and phone wagering for three months up to a lifetime.
  • UK. Licensed operators are responsible for the third parties they contract with, including affiliates (LCCP social responsibility code provision 1.1.2), so promotional racing content reflects on the operator too.
  • US. Horse racing wagering has its own state rules. Check the state before promoting betting on the Derby.
