Sports Event SERP Features and How to Record Them
Around a big event, the results page fills with features such as news, scores and video, and the mix changes by market and by hour. Record what you see with its settings and time, and compare like with like, instead of assuming a feature is always there.

Key points
- Google says publishers are automatically considered for Top stories and the News tab; there is no sign-up.
- We found no Google documentation that lets publishers opt into live sports score features.
- Event rich results need Event markup on pages about events people can attend and book; betting offers do not qualify.
- An observation without country, language, device, date and time cannot be compared with another.
What appears around events
| Feature | When it tends to appear | What publishers control |
|---|---|---|
| Top stories and news results | When there is news about a team or event | Google says publishers are considered automatically; follow its news content policies |
| Live scores and results | Around matches | No publisher opt-in documented |
| Video results | Highlights, previews | Your video pages and their metadata |
| Featured snippets and other answers | Factual questions ("when is", "how does") | Clear, sourced answers near the top of the page |
| Event results | Events people can attend | Event markup, only for qualifying event pages |
An observation template
- Settings. Query, country, language, device, signed in or out, and the exact date and time with time zone.
- Phase. Days before, hours before, during or after the event.
- Features. Each feature in order from the top, and which domains appear in it.
- Organic results. The first ten results, with page type (official, news, publisher, operator).
- Evidence. A screenshot or export saved with the settings in the file name.
Repeat the same template at the same phases for comparable events. Two observations taken at different phases or in different markets are not evidence of a change.
Common mistakes
- Treating one screenshot as the typical result.
- Comparing a UK result on mobile with a US result on desktop.
- Assuming a feature is "new" without a dated earlier observation.
- Adding Event markup to a preview to try to win event results. Google's guidance covers events people can attend and book, not articles or offers.
Questions
How do I get into Top stories for sports news?
Google says publishers are automatically considered for Top stories and the News tab. Publish accurate, original news and follow Google's news content policies.
Can I add structured data to appear in live scores?
We found no Google documentation for publisher opt-in to live score features. Plan for them to answer live questions.
Does Event markup work on a betting preview?
No. Google's Event guidelines cover events at a physical place that the public can book. A preview or an offer is not an event.
